How to make your child’s day?

Make them a mermaid tale or any other sort of costume piece of a character they like. I am sorry I don’t have a how-to on these as I just sort of made it up but I will give you one tip that may help if you decide to make them. I used a wire coat hanger in the fin part to give it some body. I folded down the top hook part of the hanger so it wouldn’t hurt my kids feet, too. Shhh…. it is our little secret! My kids have been having a blast with these. dsc_8209 dsc_8221 dsc_8225

Dance Recital Wraps

Last weekend my older two girls performed in a dance recital. On the rehearsal night they noticed that many of the girls had a robe they would wear over their dance costume during the down time and begged that I get one for them as well.  Since this was only two days from the actual recital and it might be a lot of extra work driving to different stores looking for something that would work, I thought what they heck, I can just make that!

I used two of my shirts that I had in a bag “to donate” because they weren’t working for me anymore. Perfect. Then, I had the girls try them on and accessed what I would need to change and thought about how I wanted them to look. With that in mind, I got to work cutting and sewing. No need for an extra trip to the store with four energetic kiddos and as an added bonus it was 100% free!!! Problem solved and budget not touched. Woohoo!

Couch Reinvented

So this is what our couch typically looks like in the playroom. It is covered by a slipcover that never stays on. It was a pretty nice slip cover I bought a while ago so I was less than thrilled with how it held up. I don’t want to spend my time reapplying the cover so I thought there had to be another way to fix this…dsc_7058

The actual couch looks like this underneath. Some would say it is time for a new couch, but I beg to differ. Time for some Fix-Up-Magic!!dsc_7197

Woohoo! Check it out!
I cut up the slipcover and then reattached it so it was taut against the frame of the couch with a staple gun. Then I used the remaining fabric to sew a cover for the two cushions. If you take off the cushions you will see a different dark gray material on the bottom side because there was only enough of the slipcover material to cover the top and front sides with a little over the edges. You can’t tell unless you take off the cushions-if that makes sense.  A lot of couches are made like this with the nice material on the top, so honestly its not a big deal.

Price for the “new couch”? FREE because I used supplies I already had. Whoopee! I love this type of fix-ups! No amount of jumping or pillow fighting is going to wreck this baby.  (Well, I better not tell my kids that… Ha,ha.  Basically, it is sturdy and looks great!)

Finished Painting the Girl’s Dollhouse!

My kids got this dollhouse from their grandparents a few months back. We decided to change it up a little by giving it a fresh coat of paint and making it look “Tudor.” Can you see the picture of the Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen Germany behind the dollhouse? We are fans of Germany if you couldn’t tell. 🙂

Reading Room

This room was originally a dining room with a big ol’ chandelier. Slowly but surely we have been transforming it into our kid friendly reading room. My Dad helped by installing a fan and yesterday, I spent my Christmas cash on this rug. I love it! It brings a lot of light into the room making it a wonderful place for enjoying a good book.
It is not finished. As you see I need to finish hanging up some pictures. I would like to get 2 large bookshelves but instead of holding off until I can afford the ones I want and have the room be empty for who knows how long, why not make do with the bookshelf and stuff I already have? Perfect. Maybe I don’t need those huge white bookshelves I originally imagined after all. 🙂 World of books here we come!

Also, my friend gave me a great idea to cover a bulletin board with cute material and designate it as a place to display kid art. My kids love this and appreciate their art being displayed. To do this, I just found a bulletin board at a local thrift store and covered it with some material I already had. I used a staple gun on the backside to secure the material pulled tight against the board. You should try one!!! They are cute, functional, and won’t break the bank! Plus, your kids will feel special to see their art everyday. You can’t go wrong. 🙂
